High Performing Team Assessment (HPTA) - Bates

Modified on Mon, 25 Aug at 4:02 AM

This article explains how to use the BTS High Performing Team Assessment (HPTA): what the model measures, the different versions and use cases, how to scope and order, what reports look like, how to run debriefs, and pricing guidance. It follows BTS’s standard Freshdesk layout for quick reuse in proposals and delivery.

Introduction & Purpose

The HPTA is a short, scalable, easy-to-understand assessment that predicts which teams will be perceived as most effective. It is flexible for intact teams, team leaders, and 360 views, and can be deployed within workshops or longer journeys.

Target Audience

  • Intact Teams & Team Leaders: Diagnose team strengths/opportunities and create an action plan.
  • Leader Cohorts: Apply HPTA concepts to how they lead their own teams (simulation- or discussion-based designs).
  • Program/Project Teams: Select the right HPTA option, coordinate survey logistics, and integrate debriefs into journeys.

HPTA Model & Factors

The HPTA model focuses on four predictive factors of effective teams: :contentReference[oaicite:4]{index=4}

  • Psychological Safety: Team members reliably behave in ways that support each other and the team’s best interests.
  • Constructive Conflict: Comfort debating different viewpoints to reach the best outcomes.
  • Enterprise Value: Accessing diverse opinions and data to make decisions that add value to the whole organization.
  • Clarity: Clear roles, responsibilities, priorities, and accountabilities.

Related concept: creating “Brave Spaces” vs. merely “Safe Spaces” to enable honest contributions and learning.

Versions & Use Cases

“Boat-Load of Options” overview: 4 HPTA versions; 2 workshop designs for cohorts; team development modules; and journeys from 1 day to 3 months. Always consult the HPTA leads before committing to a solution.

  • Team (with leader): Team members + leader.
  • Team (no leader): Team members only.
  • Team 360: Team members, team leader, and other stakeholder teams.
  • Team Leader Cohort: For leaders of different teams (project or senior leaders)

Cohort workshop designs: Project team leaders (simulation-based moments) and Senior team leaders (discussion-based moments).

Team “type” framing: Use the grid of shared goals × partnership (Co-existence, Co-operation, Collaboration, Co-creation) to locate the team today and target where it needs to be.

Ordering & Setup Workflow

  1. Pre-sell check: Before any verbal/written commitment, contact Michael Seitchik or Andy Atkins to select the best HPTA option and sales assets.
  2. Engagement summary: With E&TP CoE, capture client context, desired outcomes, timeline, resources (allow ~6 weeks lead time; certified facilitator required), and pricing approach.
  3. Kickoff intake: After verbal agreement, contact Angela Richardsto start the survey process. Provide:
    • Client/team name; all rater names & emails (Halo entry ~1 week)
    • Survey deadline (typical rater completion ≥3 weeks after entry)
    • Distribution list for the feedback report (BTS/client facilitators)

Reports & Debrief Flow

Intact Team report: Factor scores; highest/lowest-rated statements; hidden strengths & blindspots.

Cohort of Team Leaders report: Cohort factor profiles; highest/lowest items; interpretation guide; link to a fillable workbook for action planning.

Standard debrief flow (~2 hours): The HPTA → Your Team’s Context → Highest Priorities → Action Plan.

Journeys, Modules & Go-Dos

  • Team Acceleration – Intact Teams: HPTA + facilitated sessions; “go-do” actions between workshops to apply learning.
  • Leading High Performing Teams – Cohort: HPTA for team leaders; pod coaching; moments/scenarios for project vs senior leaders.
  • Content library: 20+ development modules across HPTA factors and 11+ go-dos you can slot into journeys.

Pricing (Internal Guidance)

  • Team Acceleration (intact team): Indicative HPTA price point ~$450 per team (same price for team-only or 360).
  • Teaming workshop (cohorts): ~$40 per participant for HPTA.
  • Proposal guidance: Wrap HPTA (or LTPI) costs into the overall project fee—avoid itemizing as a separate line.

Watchouts & Considerations

  • Don’t sell the wrong option: Always align with Michael/Andy before committing to a client solution.
  • Plan the runway: Intake (Halo entry ~1 week) + rater completion (~3 weeks) + debrief scheduling; target ≥6 weeks lead time.
  • Certified facilitation: Ensure an HPTA-certified facilitator is available for debriefs.
  • Create “brave spaces”: Reinforce norms that enable constructive conflict and psychological safety.
