This article explains how to use the BTS Portrait in programs and coaching: what it measures, how participants complete it, how to read outputs (Self Portrait, Expert Portrait, Cohort Analysis), and how to request access, pricing, and customization.

Introduction & Purpose

The BTS Portrait is a fast, accurate, work-relevant mindset portrait used to spark self-awareness, enable targeted coaching, and enhance learning journeys. It organizes 24 traits/mindsets into four domains—Relate, Inspire, Think, Be—to create a common language for leaders and coaches.

Target Audience

  • Participants / Leaders: Take the Portrait and use insights for development.
  • Facilitators / Coaches: Debrief Self Portraits; use Expert Portrait to guide coaching (requires short user training).
  • Program / Project Teams: Include Portrait in journeys; request cohort analyses and custom reports.

What is the BTS Portrait?

  • Quick: ~15 minutes to complete; immediate Self Portrait output.
  • Accurate & practical: Modern business language; high face validity for leaders.
  • Science-based: Based on the Big Five; 72 ipsative item pairs across 24 dimensions; raw scores are normed vs. peers.
  • Domains: The 24 mindsets are grouped under Relate, Inspire, Think, Be (also shown in input/report views).

Participant Experience

Participants respond to paired statements (ipsative format) that feel realistic and reduce “fake-good” responding; upon completion the Self Portrait appears instantly. (See Online Portrait Input on p.6 and Self Portrait Report view on p.7 of the Coaching Handbook.)

The experience is intentionally brief and engaging to increase trust in the results and minimize fatigue.

Reports & Outputs

  • Self Portrait (standard): Personal snapshot of dominant tendencies (“Your Big 5”), plus Watchouts for over-used strengths—ready to use in workshops.
  • Expert Portrait (for coaches): Deeper report that maps all 24 mindsets with stanines and percentiles; supports targeted coaching (example shown on p.8).
  • Cohort Analysis (optional): Aggregated patterns across a group to inform facilitation and OD decisions.
  • Custom Reports: Tailor language to link personal mindsets to a specific initiative (e.g., decision-making, culture), creating affirmations and suggestions where gaps exist.

Coaching & Interpretation

  • Four domains lens: Review patterns across Relate, Inspire, Think, Be to form initial hypotheses before drilling into items.
  • Focus on meaningful ranges: Treat stanines 1–3 and 7–9 as strongest signals; 4–6 are “average/noticeable” and usually not decisive on their own.
  • Validate in dialogue: Use the Expert Portrait to guide conversation; confirm interpretations with the coachee rather than diagnosing from the report alone.
  • Coach enablement: A short user training (≈4 hours) is required for coaches using the Expert Portrait; coaches receive the Portrait Coach Manual.

Reference visuals: The Handbook includes an Example Expert Report layout (p.8) and input/report screenshots (pp.6–7) to orient facilitators.

Ordering, Access & Support

  • Invite requests: Email assessmenthelpdesk@bts.com with participant first/last names and emails; include any cover note and due dates.
  • Test-drive: BTSers and client decision-makers can request complimentary test invitations.
  • Product owners: For custom reports, engage Emily.Crowe@bts.com; additional support from jurgen.bank@bts.com

Pricing & Customization

  • Standard: Self Portrait & Expert Portrait are typically priced per person; Cohort Analysis is priced per instance. (Contact Assessment Helpdesk for current internal rates.)
  • Custom: Custom Self Portraits and algorithms (for MBA/VIA scoring) are available; discuss scope and pricing with the product team.

Watchouts & Considerations

  • Interpret responsibly: Portrait is a development tool; validate insights with the participant and context before actioning.
  • Avoid over-reading averages: Don’t over-index on mid-range stanines (4–6); look for patterns at the extremes and across domains.
  • Use modern language: Keep debriefs practical and business-relevant; the reports are designed to be easily understood without heavy psychometric jargon.
  • Plan lead times: If you need cohort analyses or custom reports, coordinate early with the product team.
