Point, Badges and Leaderboards (PBL)

Modified on Wed, 6 Aug at 5:51 AM

Gamification in Momenta is a powerful way to boost learner engagement. This guide covers how to implement Points, Badges, and Leaderboards (PBL) into your journey setup. You'll learn how to assign points to activities, create badges that reward key behaviors, and build dynamic leaderboards that drive healthy competition.

Overview

Gamification (PBL) in Momenta uses three elements to enhance motivation:

  • Points: Earned from completing activities, modules, or stages
  • Badges: Awarded for achieving specific goals or milestones
  • Leaderboards: Rank participants based on their learner scores

To activate, navigate to Journey Configuration > Progress & Scoring and enable each feature as needed.

Setting Up Points

Points are stored in Learner Scores, which can be basic (manual) or advanced (formula-based).

  1. Go to Journey Configuration > Progress & Scoring
  2. Enable “My Progress” and “Show Leaderboard Metrics”
  3. Add Learner Scores (e.g., Completion, Leadership, Strategy)
  4. Assign point values to each activity, module, or stage using the "Points for completion" checkbox

Advanced Learner Scores allow you to use formulas like:

  • AVERAGE, ROUND, MAX, MIN, IF

Creating Badges

Badges are visual rewards triggered by learner score equations.

  1. Go to My Accomplishments in Progress & Scoring
  2. Click the + to create a new badge
  3. Set a name, description, images (awarded & not awarded)
  4. Define the awarding logic using an IF() equation

Tip: Use the Insert button to add learner scores into your logic—typing them manually won't work.

Optionally, you can:

  • Hide the badge until earned
  • Filter by audience (Journey vs Cohort)

Adding Leaderboards

Leaderboards allow users to compare points in real time.

  1. Go to Journey Configuration > Progress & Scoring
  2. Click the + next to “Learner Score Leaderboard”
  3. Choose between:
    • Single Score: One learner score with bar chart
    • Multi-Score: Compare multiple categories
    • Anonymous: Hides names, shows only score
  4. Set the scope to “Journey” (all cohorts) or “Cohort”

Participants will see their rank and the top scores on their journey homepage.

Watchouts & Best Practices

  • Use meaningful badges to avoid “participation trophy” fatigue
  • Keep scoring self-contained to the journey (avoid client-level scores unless aggregating across multiple journeys)
  • Test scoring logic with dummy users before go-live
  • Advanced scores cannot be manually assigned points—use equations only
